“The best marketing doesn’t feel like marketing.” – Tom Fishburne
How true is that?
In this busy digital world, the brands and companies who are rising to the top don’t advertise like they used to. Instead they use strategies to become our ‘friends’; our trusted ‘go-to’ people. When all’s said and done, they don’t push sales in the traditional sense.
Marketing has many forms, and this has never been more apparent than in the wake of the digital marketing age where (if you ask most of the customers we work with) there seems to be almost too many options, and the overwhelm is immense.
If you’re looking to stand out, think about hitting the door mat or post box as well as your online activity.
We get a lot of traction with our postal campaigns, and the ‘lumpy mail’ option is one your business could really succeed with.
The simple fact is this: lumpy mail is tangible. When you can see and hold something in your hands it has more power and is more memorable.
Here are our five top favourites when it comes to lumpy mail:
1. Have a break, have a lumpy Kit-Kat brochure
This is our number one item at the moment! The Kit-Kat brochure has consistently got us results with new clients and it’s worked well in turn for our clients, too.
The Kit-Kat brochure is simple: We use it as an ‘introducer’ and invite clients and future customers for a further chat by giving them some chocolate to enjoy while they read about us.
The brochure is usually a six-page A5 landscape brochure with plenty of space to tell people what we do, how we do it, and how it could help them. The brochure comes with a chocolate Kit-Kat that the recipient can enjoy as they read it! This works time and time again, and with some targeted mailing you could well improve your outreach success rate.
2. Shall we put a date in the diary?
At the number two spot we have the humble desk calendar. Desk calendars are simply tent-shaped carboard adverts for your company that, when placed on a desk, will market your business quietly all day long as well as helping your clients by giving them a visible calendar.
Desk calendars can be neatly folded into an envelope and then quickly popped into a 3D tent at the other end by the recipient. They can stay on your prospect or customer’s desk throughout the year, so you get a whole lot of awareness for 12 whole months!
3. Take note of this one …
On your desk (and your customers’ desks) you probably have little reminders or notes you’ve taken from calls or emails, or simply ‘to dos’ that you need to do today, tomorrow, or this week. Even in this digital world, there’s a strong argument for writing things down for your mind and memory. And sometimes it’s nice to be able to doodle while you’re on the phone.
The notepad or desk pad is great for this and ideal to send to your clients. Available in A5 or A6, these can easily be sent through the postand throughout the year when they ask for another one. They will; they always do!
You might even go for a special A3 version for some simple contact in the New Year giving you the chance to be there, right on their desk, for months and months.
4. The pencil is mightier than the pen and the sword!
Giving away pens is a tried, tested, and trusted form of marketing in the printing world and we’ve always printed these, and given them away too.
But marketing (and printing) is about standing out. and When you go to an exhibition or business show you’re met with wall-to-wall branded pens and that can be boring if that’s all you offer.
So, enter the branded pencil.
Everyone’s got a branded pen, but how many pencils have you seen given away?
From time to time we all need a pencil and with no one else giving them away you’ll find you’re the only pencil in the draw or exhibition bag. It’s simple, but very effective. Pair the pads with the pencils and you have the perfect way to stand out on a client’s desk!
5. Time for tea?
Drinking tea and coffee is hugely popular in most offices and workplaces. Drinking caffeine is probably keeping the UK economy going!
So, let’s help you appear there too. Branding up some coasters and sending them in the post and asking for a chat over a cup of tea is a really simple and effective way to get through the gatekeepers. Also, when they keep the coaster on their desk, it’s another way to appear for weeks, months, or even years to come.
You can be really creative with a coaster, but adding your brand is key to your brand awareness as it reminds your customer (or prospect) about you every time there’s a tea break!
It’s time to go old school
As we hope you can now appreciate, standing out might just mean going back in time and using the post.
Getting little gifts in the mail can brighten someone’s day. It’s a great way to get noticed and a sure-fire way to start conversations that you really want to have, but aren’t. Or send little gifts to your existing clients to simply stay front of mind when you’re not even there!
