Printing is an industry that uses specific terminology, which can be confusing to people outside the profession. This can sometimes get in the way of people’s creativity as they stick to what they know rather than trying something different that could be even more effective. Large format printing is one example of this.
What is large format printing?
The term ‘large format printing’ refers to printing that’s bigger than what a traditional, commercial printer offers. Size-wise, that means it’s bigger than 45 x 64cm. There’s no upper limit to the size, though, which is why you can whole building wraps. If you hear the phrase ‘wide-format printing’, this is a form of large format printing even though some people use these terms interchangeably.
The different types of large format printing
There are loads of different types of large format printing. Truly loads! These include:
- Banners – you typically see these above roads or on railings.
- Wall, floor, and window graphics – these are increasingly popular and they’re a great way to communicate your brand and personality.
- Exhibition signage – for your company stand or exhibition as a whole.
- Billboard posters – there are some hugely creative and eye-catching designs.
- Point of Purchase displays – the kind you’d see in a shop advertising a special offer or a new product launch.
We have several large format printing options for you to browse in our online shop, where you can order instantly, upload your artwork, and we’ll deliver the items directly to you.
When to use large format printing
Large format printing can be complementary to your existing marketing, even if you usually focus on digital marketing.
It’s effective when you want to make a big statement, or, equally, provide clear/practical guidance – the sort of signage you see at an airport, for example.
How design comes to life with large format printing
Don’t be afraid of going (literally) big with your design – you can have so much fun with it as well as creating an extra string to your marketing bow. Your organisation will definitely stand out and you’ll get your brand seen.
There is the added benefit of being able to print on a wider range of materials, which brings an added dimension to your creativity. Options include:
- Vinyl.
- Cloth.
- Glass.
- Wood.
- Foam board.
- Corrugated plastic.
- Metal.
Given the inks and materials involved in large format printing, the piece can be more durable and able to withstand elemental conditions such as rain, heat, and sunlight without incurring damage.
